Volume Measurement Tool

The Volume Measurement Tool allows you to calculate the volume of specific areas on your plans. This tool is essential for accurately estimating materials and resources for projects involving three-dimensional spaces. The tool can be accessed via the quick launch menu or the bill of quantities table.

Adding a Volume Measurement

  • via Bill of Quantities Table
  1. Right-Click in the Bill of Quantities Table. Select "New Task."
  2. Complete the required details i.e. height and click "Save."
  3. Click the "Link Drawing +" icon and choose "Volume Measurement  ".

Performing a Volume Measurement

  1. Click where you want the Volume measure to begin. This establishes the first Point, which is the starting point of the takeoff item.
  2. Move to the next Point and click again. A line will appear between the two points while performing the measure. To undo the placement of a Point, press CTRL / Command⌘ and press Z.
  3. Move to the third Point and click, continue this process.
  4. To close out this volume measure, double-click your last point.

  • via Quick Launch
  1. Access the top quick launch menu and select the " Volume Measurement  ".
  2. This creates a new volume measure in the bill of quantities table, listed under the drawing name/description parent.
  3. Complete the required details i.e. height and click "Save."
  4. Click on the plan to begin a new volume measurement.

Plan Navigation Hints

  • Click, hold, and drag to move around the plan.
  • Use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in and out for greater accuracy.

Editing Volume Measurements

  • Hold the CTRL key while hovering over the measurement element to reveal edit points.
  • Drag the edit points to their new locations to adjust the volume measurement.

Volume Cut-Out Tool

The Volume Cut-Out Tool is used to subtract a specific volume from your measurement. This can be useful for accounting for spaces within the measured area that should not contribute to the overall volume, such as staircases, built-in furniture, plumbing fixtures, or HVAC systems.

Read more about it here.

Editing the Volume Measurement

  1. Right-click an element to open the context menu with options to:

Continuing with a Previous Measure

  • Select the "" icon from the bill of quantities table to continue with a previous measure and place a new volume on the plan.

OR

  • You can continue with the measure by Right clicking on element to open a context menu with option to "Continue".

Adjusting Volume Totals

You can adjust measurement totals using the equation field. Measurements can be manipulated with Excel-type formulas. For example, multiplying the volume by a set number [v]*9 will multiply the total volume by 9. The formula follows the PMDAS rule: Parentheses (brackets) first, followed by multiplication, division, addition, then subtraction. Detailed information and examples on using formulas are provided in the article "Using Formulas."
